Practice makes perfect. In crochet, patience is doubled. This easy DIY handbag crochet tutorial by Bag-O-day Crochet on YouTube is ideal for beginners to add to their big collection.

Materials:

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Red heart four-ply yarn

Directions:

Start off with a slipknot through your crochet hook. Chain 4 and slip stitch in the beginning ring.  Chain 3 to have a total of twelve double crochets. Yarn over and do 11 double crochets.  Tightly pull the yarn tail to make the circle smaller. Slip stitch into the beginning chain and close the round. Work some ruffles to make the flower by working in the front loop stitches and making 4 double crochets in each stitch. Repeat around. When you reach around, slip stitch into the first chain 3 to close the round.

Clip the excess tail and hide it along with the crochet.

Start off with a slipknot through your crochet hook and work in the back loops. Chain 3 and put two double crochets in the back loop of the twelve stitches. In total, you will end up with 24 double crochets.  Continue to put two double crochets around each stitch until you get back to the beginning. To close the round, slip stitch into the beginning chain 3. Slipstitch in the next stitch but only in the front loop. Make 3 more doubles to make 4 in total.

Work all the way around and end the round by slip stitching into the first chain 3. Trim the yarn and hide the excess in the crochet project.

Starting with a slipknot through your hook, crochet on the back, working in the back loops. Chain 3 and increase the circle around it. In total, you will have 36 stitches. Increase around the circle to start with the back.  Coming to the end of the row, slip stitch into the beginning chain 3 to close the round. Chain 3 and make another double crochet. Make 3 double crochets in a row and do an increased stitch all around.  Repeat until you finish with seven rounds.

Make another one exactly the same without the flower for the back of the bag. Stitch the side piece of the bag by starting off with a slip stitch and chain 13.  Go through the third stitch and draw up a loop. Repeat 6 times and chain 1 to lock. Skip a stitch through and repeat.  Chain 1, go through the bigger open loop and make another layer of the instruction prior to the break.  In the end, chain 1 and turn. Repeat another layer.

In total, you’ll have 54 rows.  Sew the side part to the front and bag sides of the bag.  For the handle, make a puff stitch of 35 rows. Fold in half and sew to make the handle thicker using a needle. Lastly, sew the handles to the bag.
